Dominican Village Welcomes New Director of Wellness
Congratulations to Erika White appointed as the new Director of Wellness. Erika joined Dominican Village in August 2020, her compassionate care and work ethics was evident early on. Her commiment to the mission of Dominican Village led to her promotion.

Dominican Village Celebrates Festival of Lights
Scaled back but still shining bright, our Festival of Lights was a celebration of hope. Residents and guests enjoyed a spectacular holiday and Christmas lights display, while enjoying live entertainment from the North Shore Pops. Santa made a grand and most fabulous entrance to officially kick off the season!

Welcome New Director of Operations Anna Julien (RN, MHA)
Dominican Village welcomes Anna Julien (RN, MHA) to the position of Director of Operations.
Anna began her career in nursing as a nursing assistant in Central Massachusetts and went on to receive her LPN and RN degrees. Anna and her family moved to New York as a RN Special Project Coordinator working with residents and staff on improving resident’s experience from admission to discharge and working with facility staff and professional team in developing a resident center care environment.
With an interest in enhancing her knowledge of long term care management, Anna returned to school Hunter College to earn a BSN. She later received her MSN/MHA from the University of Phoenix, Arizona and has her BELS Certification.
For the past five years, Anna has held the position of Director of Nursing Services at Meadow Park Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Flushing, Queens.
Anna is very proud of working with the professional team as its Director of Staff Education, Training and Research at Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn. Specifically, Anna was instrumental in coordinating the application process and assistance in the facility receiving the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award both Bronze and Silver.

Karyn Leto LPN joined Dominican Village as their new Assisted Living Case Manager. Karyn’s experience includes Patient Advocacy, Home Care and Hospice care. Karyn stated, “she looks forward to using her experience and knowledge in providing the best level of care and service for our residents.

Ljilijana Kavelj has worked at Dominican Village’s Housekeeping Department for 14 years. With a colorful flower always in her hair, she greets everyone with a smile. With our mission in her heart she provided kind words and encouragement to both residents and staff alike. We thank her for her service.
Dolores Joshua has worked at the front desk for over 17 years. Her commitment and dedication to serving the residents and all those who walked through the front doors is second to none. Her knowledge of daily activities, programs and the comings and goings of our beloved residents were embedded in her memory bank. It’s clear that her devotion to our residents, family members and vendors has made a positive impact on our organization. Best wishes for a Happy Retirement!

HONORING ALL WHO SERVED!
On November 4th Dominican Village & NYS Senator John Brooks hosted a luncheon to salute our Veterans. 175 Veteran attendees enjoyed lunch catered by Dominican Village food service, entertainment provided by the Jewel notes and refreshments donated by Clear Caption.
Senator Brooks recognized Dominican Village’s Veteran Centenarians Anthony Cirenza, 102 years old (served in three wars: WWII, Vietnam & Korean War)
& Dr. Nancy Leftenant-Colon 101-year-old whose career and accomplishments in the Military is an extensive list. Nancy a Registered Nurse Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps served in the position of National Secretary for Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated (TAI), from 1978-1987. In 1987, Nancy was duly elected to position of 1st Vice President, and in 1989, she was duly elected to the position of President of Tuskegee Airmen, Incorporated, the first woman to be elected to the position.

FUN FALL FRENZY AUCTION A HUGE SUCCESS!
Dominican Village’s Annual Auction was a huge success. The Helen Butler Hall was filled to COVID capacity with our loyal supporters and adorned with 150 magnificent baskets.
Special thanks to everyone who so generously donated items, those who made fabulous baskets, our underwriters, sponsors, and volunteers who made the event look effortless and the vision possible.

Dominican Village Congratulates One of their Own!!!
Congratulations to Jose Cotto for being selected as one of the 2021 Hispanic Heritage month celebration recipient. “His contributions and dedication to our Hispanic communities and our great state of New York have not gone unnoticed,” said Senator Brooks.
Jose was personally thanked for his 11 years of exemplary service at Dominican Village as their Housekeeping Supervisor.

PEACE POLE PROJECT
On Saturday October 2, 2021, Pax Christi Long Island Peace Pole Project honored Dominican Village resident Agnes Kelly for her years of leadership and service in promoting peace, non-violence, and social justice.
Peace Poles carry the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” and have been planted by supporters the world over in every region and continent on Earth. hanks to Agnes for her generous donation, two Peace Poles now stand at Dominican Village.

Dominican Village’s Dr. Nancy Leftenant-Colon celebrates 101 years
Nancy celebrated her birthday surrounded by family, friends and a special Zoom presentation from fellow Tuskegee Airmen extending Happy Birthday wishes.
Described as a “trailblazer” Nancy has lived through generations of American history. Her long list of firsts includes: First commissioned African American nurse to be integrated into the Army Nurse Corps. First (and only women) to be president of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. and along with others, she received the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush on March 29, 2007. In 2018 Amityville Memorial High School Library was named in her honor. Most recently, Nancy was inducted into the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Hall of Fame. Nancy says, “I’m not done yet”!

Dominican Village celebrates National Assisted Living Week!
Dominican Village joined tens of thousands of Assisted Living communities across the country celebrating National Assisted Living Week, Sunday, September 12th through Saturday September 18th, 2021. Dominican Village Activities team kicked off the National theme of “Compassion, Community, Caring" with fun filled activities and events. A balloon making course, Bubbles and Champagne party with live entertainment, Coney Island themed day - Nathan’s famous hot dogs and fries were served, and carnival games were played. Day at the Races was action packed, staff were the jockeys and the residents’ placed bets on who would win. The week ended with a Sock Hop dance party!

Wear a Mask, Save a Life Mask Up Earth!
Chiraj, a nonprofit founded by Dr. Rajeev Fernando has donated over 28,000 masks to 28 countries through its Mask Up Earth campaign. Dominican Village is grateful to be one of the recipients.
Dr. Fernando stated “masks are the single most important tool we have right now to slow the spread of COVID. Both the CDC and WHO recommend wearing of cloth covering in public places to stop the spread of COVID-19.” He added “the chance of transmission goes down from 17.4% to 3.1% when masks are worn.”

The Director of Wellness is responsible for overseeing the Nursing, Case Management, and/or Social Work Services which comprise Wellness in the Assisted Living Residence. Responsible for the department’s organization and administration, including supervision, case management, nursing, and personal care of the residents within the guidelines of the Enriched Housing Program (EHP), Assisted Living Residence (ALR), and Enhanced Assisted Living Residence (EALR) regulations of New York State.

and Joe Agovino Communications Director a question-and-answer session was held at the Helen Butler Hall led by distinguished members; Dr. Gregson Pigott: Suffolk County Commissioner of Health; NYS Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre: and Regional Director of LI Parks & former NYS Senator Monica Martinez.
Thanks to our rising vaccination rates, we are extremely happy to share that fully vaccinated residents can enjoy more community activities and expanded visitation.

The Living it Award
Dominican Village recently awarded Wellington Mendez, Environmental Services Supervisor with the “Living It Award.”
The Living It Award is an annual staff recognition program to honor exemplary service, quality care and a strong commitment to the mission and the values of Dominican Village. Dominican Village recognizes the achievements of an employee who embodies five key categories: service, teamwork, communication, integrity, and community.
Wellington Mendez exemplifies all these characteristics and attributes. An employee for seventeen years Wellington performs at a level above normal job expectations and enacts the “person-centered care” philosophy daily. Wellington is known to treat residents, family members, co-workers, and community members at large with dignity and respect. There is not a day that goes by that Wellington does not stop and ask, “how is your day going”, he is truly a gentleman.
“Although there were many wonderful nominees, Wellington shined” said CEO Eric Kalt; this is what makes Dominican Village an exceptional place to live and work.

Dominican Village Welcomes Eric Kalt
Dominican Village is pleased to announce Eric Kalt as our new President/CEO.
Eric brings to the Village more than 35 years of experience in directing and administering at long-term and acute care facilities including Crown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn, as well as Townhouse Center of Rehabilitation and Nursing in Uniondale. He also served as an administrator in St. Francis Hospital in Port Washington.

Planting Seeds Of Kindness And Love
Dominican Village would like to acknowledge the following Troops for their generosity & craftmanship. They brought so much joy and love through Cupid Crew. The residents showcased flower pots from Troop #2220 from Massapequa, Cards from Troop #1818 West Islip & sweet treats from Kinsley a Daisy from Lindenhurst Troop 2373. Kinsley made 275 Valentine packages of candy, stickers and signed notes for all the residents of Dominican Village!!

THE POWER OF EVERY CARING GESTURE
Junior Girl Scout Troop 1818 of West Islip showered the residents of Dominican Village with handmade Valentine’s Day Cards which were lovingly received by the Dominican Village residents proving the power of every caring gesture can have a profound impact on others.

Planting seeds of kindness and love Lindenhurst Daisy; Kinsley Gumowski, age 6 wanted to assure the Dominican Village residents that she was thinking of them on Valentine’s Day. Kinsley made over 270 treat bags with handwritten love notes which brightened our residents day. She is a ray of sunshine to the community and truly holds the Girl Scout motto of making the world a better place to heart.

Thank you to all the Girl Scouts who donated handmade cards through Wish of a Lifetime Cupid Crew! To Girl Scout Troop 2533 who donated handmade Valentine’s Day cards to our seniors, they really brought so much joy to the residents! Girl Scout Troop 1988 in Deer Park who sent long-distant hugs in the form of Valentine’s Cards for our residents. A heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to you! #GirlScoutsGiveBack Girl Scout Troop 2380, you brought joy and comfort to our community! Wish of a Lifetime through AARP donated cards, t-shirts, and over 250 roses so that our residents could have a wonderful Valentine’s Day. The Massapequa Girl Scouts donated flowers and homemade cards to ensure a great day enjoyed by all! L3Harris Technologies located in North Amityville donated beautiful cards and pictures.

Fountain of Hope
Dominican Village is honored to be selected as one of the 2020 Health & Business Alliance Grant recipient. This grant from the Health & Business Alliance will allow Dominican Village the ability to purchase and install a Fountain of Hope in the Spring of 2021 where residents, families and staff members may take a moment and reflect on all that has passed and look forward to a promising future
